Writing

“There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you.” Beatrix Potter

At Wellington Primary School, our writing curriculum is crafted to empower all students, including those with English as an Additional Language (EAL), with the skills and confidence to communicate effectively and creatively. Starting from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we focus on developing early writing skills through play-based, hands-on experiences that encourage mark-making and language development, setting a strong foundation for later writing.

Through a thematic approach that reflects our diverse community, we connect writing to students' lived experiences, cultures, and global perspectives, ensuring every child feels represented and valued. Our intent is to develop fluent writers equipped with a robust vocabulary, an understanding of literary devices, and the ability to apply high-order thinking across the four primary purposes of writing: to entertain, to inform, to persuade, and to discuss. Each purpose is integrated into our curriculum, offering students authentic opportunities to write for various audiences and contexts. For example:

To Entertain: Students explore narrative writing, crafting stories that connect to both familiar and diverse cultural themes, using literary devices to bring characters and plots to life.

To Inform: Through factual writing, students practice clarity and precision, developing informative texts, reports, and instructions on relevant topics that engage their curiosity.

To Persuade: Persuasive writing tasks empower students to express their viewpoints, backed by reasoning and evidence, often focusing on causes and issues important to them and our community.

To Discuss: Students engage in writing to discuss, presenting balanced views on various topics. They learn to analyse and compare perspectives, encouraging critical thinking and empathy.

With a strong emphasis on inclusivity, we provide tailored support for EAL learners through scaffolding, visual aids, and targeted vocabulary development, ensuring equal access to writing opportunities. Writing at Wellington is about inspiring every student—from EYFS through to upper primary—to find their voice, express ideas with clarity, and engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
