Handwriting
At Wellington, we use the Monster Phonics Handwriting Scheme to support children in developing strong fine motor skills and accurate letter formation. This scheme is closely linked to the daily sounds children learn in their phonics lessons, reinforcing both handwriting and phonemic awareness.
Our approach combines verbal and visual guidance to help children master the formation of each grapheme, with teachers modeling the process and students practicing by drawing letters in the air from the start to the endpoint. This integrated method strengthens both their writing skills and understanding of sounds.
Key features include:
- Letter Formation Rhymes to make learning engaging and memorable.
- Practising the formation of letters in words, along with lowercase and uppercase letter distinctions.
- Phonemic awareness support, focusing on the initial sounds that children are learning in phonics.
In Years 1 and 2, children have three handwriting sessions each week, outside of their main phonics lessons, allowing them to apply the daily sounds they've learned while continuing to improve their handwriting skills in a structured, supportive environment.
